Approach to music

We view music as an integral component of education, believing in its profound impact on the cognitive development of young minds. Music not only enhances brain function but also stimulates both creative (right side of the brain) and logical (left side of the brain) thought patterns, essential for problem-solving in our ever-changing world.

In our commitment to music education, we have established a partnership with the Stellenbosch University Department of Music (“Konservatorium”), providing their students with opportunities to develop as music educators while pursuing their studies. The Cape Choral Academy offers internships to these students and also supports their practical assessments as deemed appropriate by Stellenbosch University.

Our program includes training for student conductors, organists, vocalists, pianists, and other instrumentalists, as well as instruction in aural skills and music theory. Through hands-on experience, students have the chance to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings, preparing them to become confident and knowledgeable mentors—qualities crucial for effectiveness in today’s workplace and social environment.

At the Stellenbosch University Konservatorium, our learners receive weekly instruction in:

  • Instrumental lessons (offered in both individual and group settings)
  • Aural Training
  • Music Appreciation

All learners participate in weekly music tuition covering:

  • Music Theory
  • General Keyboard Skills
  • Individual voice lessons

Being a Musician

In the Western Cape, our rich heritage includes a longstanding tradition of schools boasting vibrant choirs. The Cape Choral Academy proudly continues this legacy, placing the choir at the heart of our institution. Here, we are not merely a school with a choir but a choir with a school, where choral music takes precedence in shaping our educational ethos.

Our choir embodies the essence of choral music in its purest form, harkening back to its origins as a sacred art form dedicated to serving communities spiritually. Rooted in this tradition, we recognize the profound impact of music on the human spirit and its ability to uplift and unify. At the Cape Choral Academy, our choir serves as a beacon of harmony, spreading joy and inspiration while fostering a deep sense of belonging and community.

With this in mind, the DR Churches of Stellenbosch, Welgelegen and the Stellenbosch Moederkerk host the performances of the choir of the Cape Choral Academy. The choir leads daily morning meditational services at the Stellenbosch Welgelegen church and the public is welcome to join these services. A choir rehearsal takes place in the morning between academic sessions and again in the afternoon.

Throughout the academic term, the choir showcases its talent with concerts held in the Stellenbosch Moederkerk every second Wednesday at 17:30. Furthermore, our choir extends its services for funeral and wedding ceremonies, available at a nominal fee. In addition to this, the choir also performs at corporate functions and other major festivals and concerts like the Woordfees in Stellenbosch and tours across South Africa. We also perform with orchestras like the Cape Town Baroque Orchestra and will perform later in the year with the Cape Winelands Orchestra.
